Curriculum Intent

EYFS Welcome to the Early Years page, where you will find information about Preschool and Reception and how you can support your child with their learning. At Corringham the staff and children are really proud of our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and love coming to school to learn.

The Early years curriculum is designed to encourage independent, inquisitive and happy learners inspiring the children to learn through their play. We recognise children’s prior learning and starting points and create a fun, creative and engaging curriculum that builds strong foundations for their future. Every child is recognised as a unique individual and we acknowledge and promote children’s interests to provide them with the opportunities to follow their imagination and creativity.

Our Preschool offers both 15- and 30-hours provision. This is free for parents who are eligible – check www.gov.uk to find out if you may be eligible. We are very flexible and can accommodate any number of hours/sessions that you may need. This can be arranged with the Preschool teacher, Mrs T Butcher. Our preschool takes children from their 2nd birthday until they are ready to join school in reception.

Our Reception year has two classes. They have room for 30 children in each class. We also have children that attend our Speech and Language Enhanced Provision base for children that have additional needs in communication and language. At Corringham Primary we have a highly skilled team of Early Years Teachers and Teaching Assistants who have a sound understanding of early child development and a great deal of experience working with this age group. This strong team is managed by Miss D Clark, our Early Years Foundation Stage, (EYFS) Leader.

In both Preschool and Reception, we recognise that children have a thirst for new experiences and knowledge, and should be provided with interactive opportunities to engage their curious minds. We always strive to promote a passion for learning.

Pla1y is a key way in which young children learn with enjoyment and challenge. Through play children explore and investigate learning experiences which help them make sense of the world, without fear of failure. However, there will be many children who are ready to work in a more structured way especially as the year progresses. We aim to challenge all the children and provide them with a range of opportunities and teaching strategies to extend their learning. We like to balance child led play opportunities with adult led activities.

As with the rest of the school both Reception and Preschool follow the Cornerstones curriculum. The topics are based on the ideas running through the Early Years Framework. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes. We use Development Matters in the EYFS, which is the framework that we base our curriculum around and it supports us to assess learning. It has been updated and amended in 2021.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile summarises and describes children’s attainment at the end of the EYFS. It is based on ongoing observation and assessment in the three prime and four specific areas of learning, and the three learning characteristics, set out below:
